'Representation is important.' Challenger announces bid for Quincy School Committee
By Peter Blandino The Patriot LedgerTom Leung, a Quincy resident, father of three, and financial analyst, has officially launched his campaign for Quincy School Committee with a focus on inclusion, representation, and equity. A top issue on his platform is advocating for the addition of Lunar New Year as an official school holiday—something the current School Committee has repeatedly rejected, despite strong community support and the fact that nearly 40% of the student population is Asian. Speaking at Wah Lum Kung Fu studio, surrounded by symbols of Chinese culture, Leung emphasized the importance of giving voice to underrepresented communities and holding elected officials accountable to the diverse needs of Quincy’s families.

Tom Leung, a 1997 Quincy High School graduate and parent of three current Quincy Public School students, has launched a campaign for Quincy School Committee—motivated by the committee’s repeated rejection of Lunar New Year as an official school holiday. Despite nearly 40% of Quincy students identifying as Asian American and over 20% of students citywide missing school on Lunar New Year this year, the proposal was narrowly voted down again in February 2025, marking the third rejection since 2023. Advocates, including Leung, argue that official recognition is not about taking a day off, but about honoring the city’s diversity and making all families feel seen and respected. With some committee members citing concerns like childcare disruptions, the issue has sparked citywide discussion—and Leung believes the only way to make lasting change is through representation. His campaign platform includes recognizing Lunar New Year and advocating for policies that reflect the true makeup of Quincy’s schools.
